Alpaca Herd Sires

Home of Quality Breeding, Proven Bloodlines and Champion Alpacas in Tennessee
Out of hundreds of alpacas, only one or two will meet the criteria to be a breeding male, an alpaca herdsire. In order to produce the ideal alpaca, breeders must be unrelenting in their adherence to top quality genetics as expressed in the traits of their alpacas. Characteristics of alpacas that we look at to identify an ideal breeding male (or female) include:
  • fiber assessments: degree of fineness (measured in microns of width), uniformity of fibers and uniformity of fineness, density of fibers (the number of fibers within a square inch of skin), and annualized measurement of fleece weights
  • conformation: the ideal body size, proportions of legs to body to neck, length of the muzzle, length of ears, proper bite (the teeth on the top meet the dental palate below without overhang), the straightness of the legs (with the proper bends and angles)
  • performance in the show rings: judges assess all the characteristics of an ideal alpaca and award them ribbons accordingly, and
  • how these ideal characteristics are successfully and consistently passed along to the offspring or baby alpacas (known as crias).
Our champion sires meet the cut. If you are looking for the very best all-around quality for your breeding males, look no further than the fine selection of Champion breeding males here at Foster's Trail & Alpaca Farm in Tennessee.
